REVIEW: BOATHOUSE AT BLACKWATTLE BAY

If it weren’t for the rave reviews or word-of-mouth, the itinerant foodie would never stumble across the Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay. Situated above the Sydney Uni rowing sheds, at the end of Ferry Road in Glebe, the Boathouse commands an impressive view over Blackwattle Bay.

Put shortly, the food was excellent. One Princess chose the famous snapper pie at my insistance, despite being no fan of pies. For a woman that usually leaves a substantial portion of her meal remaining on the plate, that OP polished off the snapper pie said a lot for its quality. I went for the whole baby snapper, lightly grilled with pipis. The fish was fresh and had the right level of softness. It was worth my efforts to look cool picking the bones from my mouth.

The desserts were equally as impressive. OP very grudgingly shared her pear souffle and I took all my time in savouring every last bit of my double chocolate pudding with strawberries and Chantilly cream.

If I were to be ultra-picky and fault anything, it would be the service. The waiters were knowledgable and coldly efficient. For example, our attempts to get any explanation about any of the 8 different types of oysters fell on deaf ears (I doubt that most diners would know the differences between the oyster regions of NSW). Perhaps I am being too critical – but the service did not come across as either warm or friendly.

However, this will not put us off visiting the Boathouse for a special occasion again. For all those lovers of seafood, the Boathouse at Blackwattle Bay is highly recommended.
