DANCE REVIEW: FUTURE TENSE
Haven’t been able to maintain this blog the last couple of weeks as work has me slaving away like a dog! Despite this, I did manage to catch Future Tense at the Opera House with One Princess last Friday.
I will say at the outset that, being a dance performance, it went largely unappreciated by me. Future Tense consists of two acts: Erection (no, not that sort) and CYP17.
Erection is a dance about the evolution of man performed by Pierre Rigal. It is an exploration of body movement as Rigal moves from the horizontal to the vertical.
CYP17 is a dance about what would happen in an advanced age of genetic engineering. The premise is that even though we have become so advanced at manipulating life, the basest of human activities, like eating, are still too difficult to program. Or at least, that is what I think this dance is about. CYP17 is performed by Kenneth Flak.
As I mentioned at the outset, dance largely goes over my head. OP and I only went because it formed part of our Adventures subscription. Accordingly to audience applause, Erection was the better performance. That said, I liked CYP17 more – but only because it contains elements of slapstick which a philistine like me is able to understand.
